Recruitment in the Aerospace Industry
UK Aerospace Industry Facts

Aerospace Industry

The UK aerospace engineering industry can enjoy a proud history, and 2003 sees the celebration of the centenary of powered flight. Today the aerospace engineering industry continues to be a world leader in scientific and technological developments, and offers some of the most exciting aeronautical engineering jobs in the world. With over 300,000 employees, and more aerospace vacancies arising all the time, it accounts for an annual turnover in excess of £18 billion. The aerospace engineering industry is one of the most diverse, technically advanced, challenging and expanding industries to work in today. It is impossible not to be impressed by the leading edge technology that continues to excel nor is it any wonder that this dynamic industry attracts many of the UK's leading engineers to pursue rewarding aerospace vacancies in their job search for suitable career opportunities.

Did you know?

  • Britain invented radar, the jet engine, ejection seats and vertical take off and continues to take a lead in these fields.
  • Every wing for Airbus airliners is built in Britain
  • The turbine in a modern jet engine has to survive in conditions hotter than the melting temperature of the metals it is made from. This is made possible by passing cooler air through even though this "cooling air" is often over 600°C
  • 2003 sees the 100th anniversary of powered flight. On 17 December 1903 Orville and Wilbur Wright made their first flight in their Wright flyer. In the following 100 years flying has become an everyday event

Current Issues

The UK Aerospace industry is currently facing one of its biggest challenges, as the effects of the September 11th 2001 attacks in the United States had a significant short-term impact on the global commercial aviation market. However, behind the recent headlines is a less well known fact - the UK Aerospace Industry is expected to recover to its previous growth rates of 5% per year. Even now the market for military aircraft, unmanned air vehicles and space technologies is enjoying significant growth. This short and medium term growth will need the support of highly skilled and well motivated professionals.

Major aerospace projects currently underway include:-

  • The Airbus A380 "super jumbo" aircraft
  • The Trent 900 turbofan engine to power the A380
  • Boeing's Sonic Cruiser
  • The Eurofighter
  • The EH101 helicopter
  • The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter

UK aerospace companies are playing a leading role in these multinational projects and many more besides.
